I did not think that Jim would be on Long John Silver's side. I thought he would run away with the Doctor when he had the chance. This either proves how loyal he is or that he is coming up with a plan to take Long John Silver down.

Unknown said...

When Jim finds long John in the stockade and says how the good people betrayed Jim, do you, think that silver is saying these things to take advantage and betray Jim later, or he actually wants to pair up? Hmm...

Unknown said...

So why did everyone else still trust long John? He betrayed them and fought a battle over the treasure. Even when they trusted him in the end (spoiler) he steals some of the gold they have. Why would they even trust a man like silver when he had made everything so difficult. His good nature? it shouldnt be enough to make them trust him again. They leave the other pirates on the island and take the big troublemaking long John? Anyone else disappointed by this book's bad ending?

After all they share the treasue?Even with Long John Silver?

@TuzongYang I agree with you the ending was not how i excepted it to be.

I was surprised to see that Silver would betray his companions to join the camp that he originally planned to execute.

I think that some of the strongest moments in remainder of the book were when at the end when:
1) Silver saluted to Squire Trelawney
2) Trelawney guarded the Captain when all the others were away

1- Because Silver represents a Pirate who's a law breaker and the Squire represents the law, the salute finally puts the pirate below the law.
2- At the beginning of the book, Trelawney and Smollett felt deep disregard for one another. Their relationship is patched throughout the course of the book.

I LOL'ed when I found out that Ben Gunn had already found the treasure long ago and had kept it safely stowed away. Very clever, don't you think? I also hated the fact that Long John Silver suddenly allied himself with the good guys...a very weird transition. Furthermore, he shouldn't have been allowed to sail away with the Doctor, Jim, Gunn, Smollet and Trelawney at the end.

@Tuzong
I was not unsatisfied with the ending. I don't think that the good men trusted Silver, but that they felt as if they owed him.

He saved Jim's life that night they returned to the stockade, and Livesey knew about this, so he let the others know.

P.S. In the book, they said that even after Silver joined the good guys, no one treated him better than a dog.

Tasnim Halim said...

@ Tuzong Yang...I agree. It didn't really make sense that the good guys would allow Long John to board with them; he basically led the mutineers to destroy them all, but abandoned them at the last second? And then he took a couple hundred guineas and ditched them? I find that hilarious; plus the crew was okay with it. LOL

Oh...Merry Christmas, people! :) 'Nother thing I wanted to say about the book...I'm going to watch the movie now. -----> ALSO, something I found very..what's the word? Ethical? Was the fact that being the good men, "English" as they call it, they left the mutineers some supplies as they abandoned them. I'm sure most people would think "You know what? FORGET THEM!" and just leave, happy to be away from such dangerous people and strive to not give the enemies any advantage. But no, the good guys left them supplies. Sad thing is, they won't last forever, and who knows what'll happen to them? Stupid and foolish as they are, they might end up killing eachother. I found it ironic and sad that they were screaming "Be merciful and don't leave us to die in such a place!" (pg 205, center) and then they used one of the muskets left for them, obviously using gunpowder as well, to shoot at them; one of the bullets sailing over Long John's head. Dumb move, isn't it? To waste some of your ammo when you knows what you may need it for later on? lmao

I kind of expected Long John Silver to betray them. It was his only way out. Its stupid for Jim and everyone else to keep trusting someone like Silver. They should of realized that Silver had the perfect chance of 'winning their trust' by saving Jims life. Overall, this part of the book shows the theme of trust and betrayal.

Marisa Harford said...

@Tasnim Halim I thought it was funny tooo when Ben Gunn had already found the treasure a while ago. Im confused on why he didnt say anything if he knew everyone was going there to find it if he knew where it was and was going along with them

Unknown said...

How Come the death of Israel really bothers jim?

Unknown said...

@JessicaTolchinsky i thought the same thing i didn't think that Jim would be on long john silvers side either, towards the end of the book

Unknown said...

how come silver was the only accused of knowing the treasure was found all along?

Unknown said...

I thought it was kind of obvious that Long John Silver was going to join the other crew, because his crew was falling apart since the middle of the book.

Anonymous said...

What are Dr. Livesey's intentions in searching for Ben Gunn?

Anonymous said...

why does Jim think he could consider himself captain to Hands?

Anonymous said...

@Margaret yermiyayeva i think the death of Israel really bothers Jim because he has seen two deaths before (his father and Billy Bones).

Unknown said...

@Daniel Cottes

Livesey already knew where to find Ben, because Jim told him.

Jim, told Hands to address him as captain because Hands was injured, and Jim was the only person of the good team on board.

Unknown said...

I don't think it was much of surprise that Silver betrayed his pirate crew since they were wild and didn't listen to him. Naturally, he'd want to find the treasure and sees more of an advantage if he sided with Jim.

Marisa Harford said...

I thought Jim was going to be some tough guy towards the end after when he killed Hands..He thought high of himself seeing that he went wondering around by himself

Ilona Mushailova said...

I knew that Silver would run away with treasure. That's what he wanted to do from te beginning.

Unknown said...

I'm surprised to be enjoying the remainder of the book.
I'm also suprised to see Jim taking initiative. I thought Jim would be a passive character that stood by as the story develops. He's actually daring and brave.
I can't wait to see what he does in the continuing chapters.

Unknown said...

I'm surprised how Jim, although young, is heavily depended by the pirates and the Doctor, in Chapter 30, Jim has informed Dr. Livesey with the location of the Hispanola in hopes of fleeing from the pirates and in Chapter 28, the fact that Jim is used as a way for Silver to assert himself as a position of power to the other mutineers. I find this ironic how Jim's character has changed as the story progresses because at first, he was depending on all the others, but now he's mostly asserting himself

Unknown said...

Ashley Kessler
I think that it was kind of stupid for Long John Silver to try and reason with the captain in the middle. Like if you have an army with double the man power of the opposing side, why not just attack?

Carina Yusupova said...

Jim surprised me when he decided who to side with. He made it seem as though he would run away with Livesey but sided with John Silver. hmmm..

Carina Yusupova said...

@Tuzong Yang, I couldnt agree more with you. The ending of this novel was really disappointing because so much was expected but not all was given to the readers. It felt like a short cut off of the story line.

Carina Yusupova said...

The loyalty and distrust between the characters in this book really agitated me. The characters who were to be left untrusted were the ones forgiven and those who were loyal, made 180 degree turns in the book. Jim was by far the biggest surprise for me.

Unknown said...

I think that Ben Gunn did the right thing by leaving Long John Silver behind. If Silver didnt try to kill the doctor and captain, all the men could have been fine and come back home.

Unknown said...

@Vivian Zheng
I agree with you, pirates cannot be trusted and since Silver forced the good men to join him, they were bound to turn on him at some point.

I wonder if somewhere, deep down, Jim feels the burden of a man who just took a life.
Maybe not, because there's this saying that goes around: "I killed him before he killed me."
And also, Hands was the bad guy after all.

Tasnim Halim said...

A pirate is a pirate. Dooty and booty is all they're after! xD

Tasnim Halim said...

@ Marisa Harford:
Ben Gunn didn't say anything about the treasure in his possession because he didn't want people coming after him for it. Everyone would be violating his island and may be even trying to kill him and then take his stuff. He had to choose wisely and listen carefully, as I'm sure he's been accustomed to do, since living marooned for three years. He's got only one shot of making it off the island, he needs to keep teh goodies away from teh bad guys.

Ilona Mushailova said...

I was surprised that Jim choose to be on Long JOhn Silver side. I thought he would be with Dr.Livesey

Unknown said...

@Ilona Mushailova

I agree. If you've been with someone for a cause, and theres this evil dude getting in your way, you just dont drop your things down and say "well, they left me, might as well join the evil Side. Im 100% sure he isnt lying or planning to betray me. No way."

Tasnim Halim said...

@ Tuzong and Ilona:
Well, Jim didn't really have much of a choice. He's only a boy. Everyone else is an adult, ten times faster, maybe somewhat smarter (mutineers), and definitely stronger. He sees Long John offering to protect him, why not take the deal? And I don't think he really "switched sides". He was more like tried to defeat the pirates, succeeded to a certain extent, got caught and was held hostage until he could get back to his friends' side. It's not like he actually wanted to stay on the pirates' side. And besides, Long John was acting weird. By that I mean, it was like he went through some phase, and became enlightened. Check out that scene where Dr. Livesey came and gave them the 'false' map and pulled Jim aside to talk. John was glad that Jim didn't take the chance and run away, he admires Jim for his intelligence and bravery. He even compares him to the mutineers when he says something along the lines of "Jim here is more man than all/any of you fools put together!"

Also wanted to say: That story was weird. Robert Louis Stevenson, you could've made a better ending.

Shacq said...

I agree with @tasnim

Unknown said...

I felt as if the ending was a bit because it was sort of unclear what exactly happened with Silver and why all of a sudden Livesey ended up trusting him enough to share the treasure with him. And I didn't understand why Silver went from being full of courage to very humble in front of the doctor and Jim. It gave me the feeling that it was all a set up and Silver never planned on killing the other seven or so good men on the Hispaniola. But overall it was a pretty interesting book and different then most.

Unknown said...

@Rebecca
I agree with you and I think that the only reason why the Doctor and the Squire let Jim come on the voyage to the Island was because they felt as if they owed or else they could've just taken the map and gone on their own. But overtime those who Jim looked up to including Silver developed this kindness towards him that made Jim their strength and weakness

Unknown said...

The most important role played after Jim is probably Ben Gunn. When Jim escaped the stockade and went to capture the Hispaniola, in the meantime the Doctor asked Ben Gunn for him help which tipped off Silver and his men into thinking they had the upper hand.

Unknown said...

i agree jim joining the captain realy is surprising because he was the one that the doctor about the pirates in the irst place.

Unknown said...

i agree with @Tasmin

Unknown said...

i wonder how this book will end though. too many unexpected things are happening. guess i'm about to find out

Unknown said...

i agree with @Maquadus Khan

Unknown said...

I finished the book and I must say the ending gave me the creeps, I don't know why
I loved this book but I wish that long John received punishment or actually went back to England
I wish the book told what happened to the three sailors left on the island
How interesting would it have been if the bullet didnt miss long John when the boat was pulling away
I really still don't get what this black spot is !!!

Unknown said...

@Tasmim Jim didn't have a choice that's true but I don't think being a boy has anything to do with it. It's because it was the only choice he has,. I don't think protection was a priority. Fate Just put him in that position

Unknown said...

I mean Tasnim sorry , spellcheck

Unknown said...

@Kyana Exceus The imitation of Flint from Ben Gunn kind of gave me creeps too. I like how the book makes the readers feel as though they're there hearing the "ghost voice" too.

Unknown said...

I want to know what happened to Silver afterwards, when they found out that he took some of the treasure and left. Did he get another boat somehow, or did he swim away?

Unknown said...

The whole thing about finding the treasure was very fast. I also didn't think that Jim would be on Silver's side at all.

Unknown said...

I agree with @Rokeya Begum

Unknown said...

@Vivian
Yea the last sentence about hearing the sea creeped me out

Unknown said...

I agree with @Tuzong Yang

Unknown said...

Even though Jim knows theres still treasure on the island, why wouldnt he ever go back to find it?

Unknown said...

I agree with Tuzong Yang. Long John Sliver betrayed everyone on the ship while seeking for the buried treasure. Everyone on the ship eventually died and I thought Jim would have joined sides with the Squire and the Doctor instead. I disliked the book's ending, it left me a bit confused on the whole concept of what the book was really about.

Unknown said...

I agree @Jessica. Everyone that was involved in the voyage could have been fine and come back home if Sliver didn't try to kill them

Unknown said...

This book indeed was a total shock towards the ending. What I predicted to happen was the total opposite

Unknown said...

i agree with nicolette if i were Jim i would go back...has anyone seen my other comment its gone missing =/

Unknown said...

the book's ending was kinda surprising i never expected silver to let anyone live but i did expect him to take extra but im still puzzled to silver turned good and i was shocked that Ben Gun was smart enough to move the gold maybe he wasnt so crazy after all

I had a hunch since Jim boarded the ship that Hands should not be trusted. When Hands turned down brandy and asked for wine because it is to strong for his head while not to long ago he begged Jim for some brandy this seemed rather strange since he drank the brandy before and was fine. His request was very questionable and Jim felt as if something was not right. This proved true and Jim eventually shot Hands for trying to kill him. Hands got what he deserved and Jim shouldn't have felt bad.

Unknown said...

Since Long John Silver was part of the pirates and committed mutiny against the Captain why would the crew trust him and take him with them back on the ship? Why wouldn't they leave him marooned on the island with the other 3 mutineers since he was part of the mutiny?

Unknown said...

Wow, so Ben Gunn already had found the treasure and Silver ended up on Jim's side. Did not expect that...

Unknown said...

@Rokeya Begum I agree with you the ending is unclear with what happened to Long john and I also agree with you and dont understand why they would share the treasure with Long john.

Unknown said...

@TuzongYang the ending was not a little disappointing. It did not make sense that after all the trouble Silver had caused, they still trusted him.

Unknown said...

It was also surprising how Jim did not run away with the Doctor when he had his chance. Thoughts?

Unknown said...

I'm surprised how Jim went on the trip in pursuit of treasure and barely mentions it in the ending but rather the design of it.

Unknown said...

@ Ashley Kessler
I don't know, I think Long John is clever, he knew that the mutineers would not be reliable because they were only interested in getting drunk and having a good time at the moment. I felt that Long John has no real alliance to whomever but to whoever has a greater advantage, whoever will lead him to the treasure, no matter what anyone else thinks of him.

Unknown said...

Its interesting how Ben Gunn already knew where the treasure was and before anyone else could come looking for it, he moved it! You'd think a man who was left alone, on an island, could care less about treasure. But then again, the book focuses on how much these things hold an importance to people.

Unknown said...

@Ashley kessler i agree, the ending was a bit quick and hard to understand especially why everyone seems to think its ok to share treasure with the man whos be your enemy throughout the journey.
